Red Flowers in South Africa, Hand-Tied and Delivered Same-Day

Red flowers do not ask for permission. They walk in, take the room, and let everyone know exactly what they mean. Whether you are sending a romantic gesture, marking an anniversary, congratulating a milestone, or just saying "I am thinking of you," red is the colour that does not need translation.

We are real florists working out of a Cape Town studio (sister brand to Fabulous Flowers, founded 1999). Every red bouquet, mixed red arrangement, and single-variety red flower order is hand-tied the morning it goes out. No marketplace re-routing. No "your driver is unavailable" texts at 4 PM. Just red flowers that arrive looking the way they did when we built them.

Types of Red Flowers We Stock

Most people default to red roses. Roses are the classic, but they are not the only red flower that lands. Here is the full red range and what each one says.

Red roses. The benchmark. Romance, passion, "I love you" without explanation. The 12-stem dozen is the traditional gesture. The 50-stem bouquet is the grand statement. Browse the red rose bouquet range or the romantic red roses bouquet for the romantic angle.

Red tulips. A more modern alternative to roses. Tidy, elegant, and slightly less expected. Strong from late autumn into early spring in SA. Tulips read as thoughtful rather than predictable. Browse the tulip bouquets range and ask for red specifically.

Red gerberas. Bright, cheerful, slightly playful. Big open daisy-shaped blooms in deep red or scarlet. Strong choice for someone who finds roses too serious or wants something with personality. Often featured in our colourful flowers range.

Red carnations. Underrated. Long-lasting (often 2 weeks plus), come in deep crimson, scarlet, and burgundy varieties. Carry serious meaning across cultures (admiration, deep love, remembrance) and look more elegant than people give them credit for.

Red dahlias. Seasonal late summer through autumn. Big sculptural blooms with layered petals. Very SA garden energy. Beautiful in mixed arrangements.

Red mixed bouquets. The catch-all. Roses plus gerberas plus tulips plus seasonal greenery, built into one statement bouquet. The version that lands when you want red impact without committing to a single flower. Browse the mixed flower bouquet range.

What Red Flowers Mean

The meaning of red flowers depends on the flower and the moment. Across most cultures, red carries the same core associations.

Red roses mean romantic love. The deeper the red, the more serious the gesture. Bright crimson reads as passion. Dark red and burgundy read as deep, lasting love. A single red rose says "you are the one." A dozen says "I am committed." Fifty says a milestone.

Red tulips mean true love and a perfect partner. Less heavy than roses, more contemporary, often used in proposal context.

Red carnations mean admiration, deep affection, and (in some traditions) remembrance. Often used in sympathy and memorial contexts as well as romantic.

Red gerberas mean cheer, joy, and admiration. The friendlier red flower. Less romance-coded than roses.

Red mixed bouquets mean "I want to celebrate you." Less specific than a single-variety arrangement, more about the impact of red itself.

When to Send Red Flowers

Red flowers suit more occasions than people expect.

Romance and anniversaries. The default. Red roses for the classic gesture, red tulips for the modern angle, red mixed for the bigger statement. Browse the anniversary flowers range or the romantic flowers for her range.

Valentine's Day. Obvious but worth saying: red flowers are still the most-sent Valentine's gift in SA by a wide margin. Order early because the Valentine's window books out. Browse the Valentine's Day gifts range.

Apologies and reconciliations. Red flowers say it without saying it. A dozen red roses with a real handwritten card lands harder than any text. Use red roses or red tulips, not red gerberas (gerberas are too cheerful for the moment).

Congratulations on a milestone. Promotion, business win, big achievement. Red carries weight without being only romantic. A bold red bouquet works.

Sympathy and remembrance. Red carnations specifically. They symbolise remembrance and deep love in many cultures, and they last longer than most other red flowers. Pair with white lilies for a more formal arrangement. Browse the sympathy flowers range.

Just because. Red flowers do not need an occasion. A random Wednesday with a hand-tied red bouquet on the doorstep is one of the strongest moves in the book.

Red Flowers Versus Red Flower Bouquets

This page covers the full red flower range across varieties (roses, tulips, gerberas, carnations, dahlias, mixed). If you specifically want a hand-tied red bouquet, head to the red flower bouquet page for the bouquet-specific selection. If you want red roses only, the red rose bouquet range is the focused option.

Use this page when you are choosing between red flower types. Use the bouquet pages when you have already decided on the format.

Mix Red With Other Colours

Red works on its own. It also pairs brilliantly with other colours.

Red and white. The classic. Passion plus purity, or passion plus elegance. Strong for proposals, anniversaries, and weddings. Browse the mixed flower bouquet range or ask us for a red and white custom mix in the order notes.

Red and pink. Softer, more romantic, less serious. Works for birthdays and Mother's Day where pure red feels too heavy.

Red and yellow. Bold, joyful, celebratory. Strong for graduations, promotions, congratulations. Browse the yellow flowers range to see the yellow side.

Red with greenery and texture. The masculine angle. Eucalyptus, dried palm, structured greenery built around red roses or red proteas. Fits the FG modern direct voice.

Browse the colourful flowers range for multi-colour options, or purple flowersblue flowers, and yellow flowers for the other colour clusters.

How to Care for Red Flowers

Red flowers can last 5 to 14 days depending on variety. Roses 5 to 8 days, tulips 5 to 7 days, carnations 10 to 14 days, gerberas 7 to 10 days, mixed seasonal arrangements average 7 to 10 days.

When the bouquet arrives, trim the stems at a 45-degree angle, place in a clean vase with cool water, remove leaves below the waterline, and add the flower food sachet we include. Change the water every two days, re-trim the stems each time, and keep the arrangement away from direct sunlight, heat, and fruit bowls. Red petals show wilting earlier than darker varieties; if you see a petal go brown, remove it and the rest will keep going.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the names of red flowers?

The most-sent red flowers in South Africa are red roses (passion, romance), red tulips (true love, modern), red gerberas (cheer, joy), red carnations (admiration, remembrance), and red dahlias (sculptural, autumn). Mixed red arrangements combine several varieties for impact. Each variety carries slightly different meaning, so match the flower to the moment.

What do red flowers symbolise?

Red flowers most commonly symbolise romantic love, passion, and deep emotion. The exact meaning depends on the flower: roses mean romantic love, tulips mean true love, carnations mean admiration and remembrance, gerberas mean cheer, and red mixed bouquets mean celebration. The deeper the red, the more serious the gesture.

What is the most popular red flower in South Africa?

Red roses, by a wide margin. After roses, mixed red bouquets are the most-sent format because they offer red impact without committing to a single variety. Red tulips are the strongest seasonal alternative (winter and early spring). Red carnations are underrated and last the longest in the vase.

Are red flowers only for romance?

No. Red flowers work for anniversaries, Valentine's Day, congratulations on a promotion or milestone, sympathy and remembrance (especially red carnations), apologies and reconciliations, and just-because gestures. The colour is romance-coded by default but the variety and the card you write change the meaning.

Can I get same-day red flowers delivery?

Yes. Order before 12 PM Monday to Saturday and Flower Guy delivers your red flowers the same day in Cape Town or Joburg. No Sunday delivery. For recipients outside CPT and JHB, our gift box range ships nationwide in 2 to 4 business days via tracked courier.

What is the difference between red flowers and a red flower bouquet?

This page (red flowers) covers the full red range across varieties: roses, tulips, gerberas, carnations, dahlias, and mixed. The red flower bouquet page is bouquet-specific (hand-tied red bouquet products only). Use this page to choose by flower variety. Use the bouquet page when you have already decided on the format.

How long do red flowers last?

It depends on variety. Red carnations 10 to 14 days. Red gerberas 7 to 10 days. Mixed red arrangements 7 to 10 days. Red roses 5 to 8 days. Red tulips 5 to 7 days. Trim stems at a 45-degree angle, change water every two days, keep out of sunlight and heat, and remove brown petals as they appear.

What flowers can I send after surgery or illness?

For recovery, red flowers work but go softer. Red carnations are the best red choice (calming, long-lasting, gentle on the eyes). Avoid heavily fragranced varieties (some lilies, hyacinths) which can be too strong in a recovery room. White roses are often a better neutral choice for surgery; pair with a get well gift box for the bigger gesture.

Can I mix red flowers with other colours?

Absolutely. Red and white is the classic combination (passion plus purity). Red and pink is softer and more romantic. Red and yellow is bold and celebratory. Red with structured greenery (eucalyptus, dried palm) is the modern masculine angle. Tell us in the order notes if you want a custom mix and we will arrange it.

How many red roses should I send?

One says simplicity and a quiet promise. Six says a thoughtful gesture. Twelve (the dozen) says lasting commitment, the traditional move. Twenty-four says a serious romantic statement. Fifty says a milestone or grand gesture. Browse the red rose bouquet range and pick the count that matches the moment.

Do you deliver red flowers in Joburg?

Yes. Same-day delivery in both Cape Town and Joburg for orders placed before 12 PM Monday to Saturday. Joburg suburb coverage includes Sandton, Rosebank, Sandhurst, Bryanston, Fourways, Parkhurst, Melville, Dunkeld, and the CBD. Check out our big sister company for more red flower gifting options.

Are red flowers good for Valentine's Day?

Yes. Red flowers are the most-sent Valentine's gift in SA by a wide margin. Red roses are the default. Red tulips are the modern alternative. Red mixed bouquets are the bigger statement. Order early because the Valentine's window books out fast every year. Browse the Valentine's Day gifts range.
