Bouquet of Flowers: Hand-Tied, Fresh, and Actually on Time

Why a flower bouquet works when words don't

Most of the time, flowers get sent because words went sideways. You forgot. You missed something. You meant to say thank you and it came out as "thanks" in a voice note. Or you didn't forget at all, you just want her to know she's on your mind without making a whole thing of it.

That's what a bouquet of flowers is for. A proper one, not a service-station wrap. Hand-tied. Seasonal. Something that looks like someone gave a damn when they made it, because someone actually did.

Our team has been hand-tying bouquets in Cape Town since long before "florist near me" was a search term. The Flower Guy range is built for the person who wants the right thing delivered without having to explain themselves. Roses when roses are the answer. Mixed bouquets when she likes variety. Lilies when you want something tall, fragrant, and unmistakable. Whatever lands, it lands hand-tied and fresh.

Same-day bouquet delivery in Cape Town and Joburg

If you order before 12pm, Monday to Saturday, your bouquet goes out that same day in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Not "usually". Not "we'll try". Same day.

In Cape Town we cover the full radius. Sea Point, Claremont, Camps Bay, Constantia, Green Point, the City Bowl, the Southern Suburbs, and the Atlantic Seaboard all on same-day. In Joburg the zone runs from Sandton and Rosebank through Melrose Arch, Parkhurst, and Bryanston into the northern suburbs.

Order cut-off is 12pm every weekday plus Saturday. Sunday is a no-fly day, so if it has to land on Sunday, order on Saturday before noon and pick Sunday as the delivery date.

Which flowers actually make the best bouquet

Short answer, it depends on who's receiving it. Long answer is below. Either way, no bouquet is "wrong" if the person sending it picked it on purpose.

Roses are the default for a reason. They carry the weight of every occasion without looking try-hard. Red roses for love, white roses for weddings and sympathy, pink for soft affection, yellow for friendship, orange for appreciation. A bouquet of roses never needs explaining.

Lilies bring height, scent, and presence. Stargazers and Casa Blancas hold up for ten days easily when they're cut fresh. They're the bouquet for the person who lights candles and opens windows.

Proteas are native, architectural, and unmistakably South African. Send these when you want the bouquet to say something about here, not just something about flowers.

Tulips are the quiet charmer. No scent, soft stems, the kind of bouquet that feels like a European café. Peonies when in season are the most requested single stem we carry. Sunflowers for a mate, a mum, or the person who calls you at odd hours and makes you laugh.

Then there are the mixed bouquets, which is what most people pick when they want someone else to have decided for them. Seasonal, balanced, and impossible to get wrong.

A bouquet of roses, the short version

Red roses bouquet if the message is romance. Twelve is classic, twenty-four is loud, a single red rose in proper wrapping is not a joke, it's a statement.

Pink roses for affection without the whole romance overtone. Mum. Sister. Friend who just nailed a promotion. Dusty pink is the most requested colour we carry, and it's the one that photographs best if she's going to post it.

White roses for weddings, new babies, and sympathy. Yellow for friendships, getting better soon, and thank yous. Orange, coral, and mixed for "I want something a bit different".

If it's roses and you're not sure which colour, pick pink. Pink is never wrong.

Flower bouquet prices in South Africa, honestly

Real numbers. Our bouquet of flowers range starts at R399 for a tidy hand-tied bouquet and runs through to R2,500+ for premium arrangements using imported stems, specialty blooms, and generous volume.

Mid-range is R699 to R999, which is where most of our orders land. That gets you a proper hand-tied bouquet, seasonal mix, wrapped in craft paper or finished with a ribbon. Good enough for an anniversary, a thank you that means something, or a first gift.

Why do bouquets cost what they cost? Fresh flowers are a perishable product with a two-week shelf life from grower to vase. Roses and lilies travel a long way to get here. The florist hand-tying yours is doing it in real time, not from a template. Same-day delivery is a dedicated driver, not a stack of parcels. You're paying for flowers, craft, and someone who shows up on time.

If you want premium, the luxury bouquet range is where the imported peonies, garden roses, and large-stem feature blooms live. If you want budget, the flowers under R500 range is the tidiest short list we have. Both get hand-tied, both get delivered the same day.

Nationwide flower bouquet delivery: gift boxes that travel

Fresh-cut bouquets do not travel overnight well, which is why we don't ship them nationwide. Instead we put together gift boxes for the rest of the country. Silk and artificial flower arrangements, chocolate hampers, wine pairings, and luxury gift boxes packaged to arrive safely anywhere a courier runs.

Delivery is 2 to 4 business days to most cities and larger suburbs. Pretoria, Durban, Stellenbosch, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, East London, Knysna, all covered. If you want flowers in hand the same day somewhere outside our Cape Town or Joburg radius, gift boxes are the move.

Sending a bouquet from overseas

If you're in London, Sydney, New York, or anywhere else and you need a bouquet in South Africa, we do this a hundred times a week. Order in your local browser, pay in your currency, we deliver in Cape Town or Joburg the same day if you order by 12pm SAST.

Card message in your own words, delivered hand-tied by a real florist, no translation required. A lot of our international orders are birthdays, Mother's Day, sympathy, and "I can't be there, but this can". If you're sending from abroad and timing feels tight, message us, we'll sort the logistics.

Not sure which bouquet to pick? Here's how to decide in 30 seconds

What a Flower Guy bouquet actually looks like when it lands

Hand-tied by one of our florists in Cape Town or Joburg. Wrapped in kraft paper or finished with satin ribbon, depending on the style. Delivered by a driver who knows the area, not a random courier van. Card message handwritten on our printed card, slipped inside the wrap where she'll see it first.

If she's at home, he'll ring the bell. If she's at work, he'll leave it at reception with the receptionist's name on the delivery note. If she's in hospital, he'll ask for the ward at the nursing desk. We deliver flowers to hospital in both Cape Town and Joburg daily.

We've been running this operation for long enough that we know which suburbs need GPS, which complexes need a security code call-ahead, and which estates want the driver to wait at the gate. Nothing gets left on a step to wilt.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bouquet of flowers called?

A hand-tied arrangement of cut flowers wrapped or tied for gifting is called a bouquet. In the trade you'll hear "hand-tied bouquet", "posy", "nosegay", or just "bunch". For our purposes, a bouquet is any cut flower arrangement that arrives wrapped and ready to go straight into a vase without the recipient having to build anything.

Which flower is best for a bouquet?

Roses are the safest universal bet, they work for romance, birthdays, thank yous, and sympathy depending on colour. Lilies bring scent and height. Mixed seasonal bouquets are the right call when you want someone else to pick. For someone specific, match the flower to them, not to the occasion.

How much does a bouquet of flowers cost in South Africa?

Our range runs from R399 for a tidy hand-tied bouquet to R2,500+ for premium luxury arrangements. The sweet spot is R699 to R999, which is where most orders land. That gets a proper mid-size hand-tied bouquet in fresh seasonal blooms.

Can I get same-day bouquet delivery in Cape Town and Johannesburg?

Yes, order before 12pm, Monday to Saturday. Sundays are closed for same-day delivery, so if the bouquet has to land on Sunday, order on Saturday before 12pm and pick Sunday as the date.

Do you deliver bouquets nationwide?

We deliver fresh cut bouquets same-day in Cape Town and Johannesburg only. For the rest of South Africa, we send gift boxes with silk flowers, chocolate hampers, or wine pairings via courier in 2 to 4 business days. Cities we ship to include Pretoria, Durban, Stellenbosch, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, East London, and Knysna.

What is the most expensive flower for a bouquet?

Peonies, imported garden roses, and specialty stems like ranunculus or cymbidium orchids sit at the top of the price range. Peonies especially, because the season is short and demand is year-round. A full peony bouquet in season runs R1,800 to R2,500+ depending on stem count.

Why are flower bouquets so expensive?

Fresh-cut flowers are perishable with a ten to fourteen day shelf life from grower to vase. Roses and lilies are imported. The florist hand-tying yours is doing it live, not from a template. Same-day delivery uses a dedicated driver. You're paying for craft, freshness, and a real person at every step.

How do I keep my bouquet fresh?

Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle under running water, remove any leaves below the water line, use fresh lukewarm water in a clean vase, and change the water every two days. Keep the bouquet away from direct sunlight, ripening fruit, and air-conditioner vents. A fresh hand-tied bouquet holds up 7 to 10 days when cared for properly.

How do I preserve or dry a bouquet after the event?

Hang the bouquet upside down in a dry, dark, ventilated space for 2 to 3 weeks. Dried roses, lavender, and proteas preserve beautifully and hold colour for years. For resin pressing, press individual flowers between parchment in a heavy book for 10 to 14 days before setting.

Can I add a personal card message to the bouquet?

Yes. Every bouquet includes a handwritten card on our printed stationery. Write what you'd say in person, we'll put it where she'll see it first. No character limit within reason, and if you want it anonymous, we'll honour that too.

What if a specific flower I ordered is unavailable?

We substitute with equal or greater value, matching colour and style. If the original had peonies in season and the season turns, we'll substitute with garden roses of the same tone. We message you before dispatch to let you know.

Can I order a bouquet online for someone else?

Yes, the entire site is built for gifting. Enter the recipient's address at checkout, add your card message, pick your delivery date, pay. They get the bouquet, you get the receipt and tracking.

What flowers are best to give after surgery or in hospital?

Lilies, roses, mixed seasonal bouquets, and scented blooms are all welcome in most hospitals. Some wards restrict strong-scented flowers or pollen-heavy lilies, so lower-pollen options like roses or gerberas are the safer pick for ICU or maternity. Always check with the ward desk if you're unsure.

What are the top flowers for a bouquet in South Africa?

Roses, lilies, proteas, sunflowers, tulips, gerberas, lisianthus, peonies in season, orchids, and mixed fynbos all feature regularly in our top-selling bouquets. Roses lead by volume, proteas lead by "most South African".

What are 10 different types of flowers used in bouquets?

Roses, lilies, tulips, peonies, sunflowers, gerberas, orchids, proteas, lisianthus, chrysanthemums. Each carries a different mood and holds different time in a vase. Mixed bouquets blend several of these, monochromatic bouquets feature one.

Do you do bouquets for weddings or corporate orders?

Yes, bulk bouquets, bridal arrangements, and corporate gifting are all handled by our events team. Minimum 48 hours notice for bridal, 24 hours for corporate. Message us for a quote.

Can I order online in South Africa and have it delivered internationally?

Our same-day fresh bouquet delivery is Cape Town and Johannesburg only. We don't currently deliver fresh bouquets outside South Africa. If you're based in SA and need to send flowers abroad, we'd recommend a florist in the destination country.
